Welcome to Chino Valley Equine Hospital

Main Text

Chino Valley also admits many horses for the investigation of neurological conditions. In addition to infectious causes, we also perform many myelography proceedures for the investigation of wobbler cases. We are fortunate to have Dr. Joe Bertone, a professor at Western University and Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine as a consultant who regularly visits the hospital for these cases.

EPM - Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis

Because EPM can look like many other neurological disorders a thorough veterinary examination is necessary. With quick diagnoses and proper medication most horses will recover from EPM, however some permanent damage may exist. Your vet will examine gait and movement, will take blood and spinal fluid samples. Treatment includes anti-protozoal, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory drugs administered by your veterinarian.

Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy

Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy is a disease that occurs when excess glycogen (storage form of glucose) or glucose-6-phosphate (form of glucose taken into cells) is present in muscles.

Often referred to as PSSM, this disease is called equine polysaccharide storage myopathy, or EPSM, when it occurs in draft horses.

A clinical diagnosis of PSSM can be made when a horse that suffers from chronic exertional rhabdomyolys (ER) is found to have amylase-resistant polysaccharide in his muscles. Amylase is the enzyme that breaks starches down to sugars. ER is a syndrome of muscle pain and cramping that is associated with exercise.

Wobbler disease is a condition of the cervical vertebrae that causes an unsteady (wobbly) gait and weakness. Horses with wobbler disease often exhibit ataxia (implying dysfunction of parts of the nervous system), show weakness in the hindquarters, or may knuckle over in their fetlocks, particularly in the rear. With advanced stages of the disease they are prone to falling. While some cases are successfully treated with nutritional and medical management, surgery is also used.
